George Washington’s dentures, ca. 1780s

More than his teeth were false, as Michael Coard and others have documented:

Although Washington considered his enslaved black workers unworthy of proper clothing (among other items), he certainly found their teeth quite worthy, so much so that he replaced a number of his unhealthy teeth with their healthy teeth, to his mouth from their mouths. While schoolchildren often were taught and sometimes still are taught about his wooden teeth — a story based on myth, they never were taught about his “slave” teeth — a story based on truth…Instead of (or in addition to) wooden teeth or standard dentures, Washington had teeth that actually were “yanked from the heads of his slaves and fitted into his dentures… [and also] apparently had slaves’ teeth transplanted into his own jaw in 1784…”

Clarence Lusane zooms out:

The White House itself, the home of presidents and quintessential symbol of the U.S. presidency, was built with slave labor, just like most other major building projects had been in the 18th-century United States…President Washington initially wanted to hire foreign labor to build the White House, but when he realized how costly it would be to pay people fairly, he resorted to slave labor…

While professing to abhor slavery and hope for its eventual demise, as president Washington…did everything he could to ensure that not one of the more than 300 people he owned could secure their freedom. During the 10 years of construction of the White House, George Washington spent time in Philadelphia where a law called the Gradual Abolition Act passed in 1780. It stated that any slaves brought into the state were eligible to apply for their freedom if they were there for longer than six months. To get around the law, Washington rotated the people working for him in bondage so that they were there for less than six months each.

Vegas Nightclub Billboard Offends Asian Americans  by STEVE HAN

Las Vegas nightclub and Asian bistro Tao is at the center of controversy for a sexually provocative billboard in Los Angeles that some are calling racist, LA Weekly reports.
The billboard near LAX shows an image of a woman’s back covered in Chinese character tattoos, with a caption that reads, “Always a Happy Ending.”
The “happy ending” cheekily refers to prostitution at Asian massage parlors in Las Vegas and elsewhere. The billboard was first spotted this week by Christine Lu, head of investment firm Affinity China. Lu took a photo of the billboard and posted it on Twitter.

TRUGANINI: THE LAST “FULL BLOOD” TASMANIAN
In May 7, 1876, Truganini, [erroneously considered to be] the last “full-blood” Black person in Tasmania, died at 73 years of age. Her mother had been stabbed to death by a European. Her sisters were kidnapped by Europeans [and sold into slavery]. Her intended husband was drowned by two Europeans in her presence, while his murderers raped her.
It might be accurately said that Truganini’s numerous personal sufferings typify the tragedy of the Black people of Tasmania as a whole. “Don’t let them cut me up,” she begged the doctor as she lay dying. After her burial, Truganini’s body was exhumed, and her skeleton, strung upon wires and placed upright in a box, became for many years the most popular exhibit in the Tasmanian Museum and remained on display until 1947.
Finally, in 1976–the centenary years of Truganini’s death–despite the museum’s objections, her skeleton was cremated and her ashes scattered at sea.

But that’s not the end of the story. After demands from Tanzania’s Aboriginal community, the British Museum returned Truganini hair and skin samples in 2002 (along with bones from other unidentified aborigines). Yet, about 30 copies of the bust of her made by an English sculptor remain on display around the world.

curvellas

Just last week, a 7th grader with a curvy build came home upset about this. She had worn an outfit with a skirt and leggings, and in the morning, a teacher had said to her, “Cute outfit.” But then her homeroom teacher pulled her aside at the end of the day and said, “You know, another girl could get away with that outfit, but you should not be wearing that. I’m going to dress code you.” Juliet Bond and the child’s mom were discussing the incident, not certain if the message to the child was ‘you’re too sexy’ or ‘you’re too fat.’

The kids also report that the teachers have been discussing ‘appropriate body types for leggings and yoga pants and inappropriate body types for yoga pants and leggings.’

Bond says, “This is concerning because it is both slut shaming and fat shaming. If a girl is heavy or developed, the message is that she cannot wear certain clothes.” Neither is acceptable. We should not be sexualizing kids, nor should we be making them feel that they can wear leggings as long as they remain stick thin. Bond asks, “Why are the girls being pulled out of class to have assemblies on whether they are wearing the right clothes, while the boys remain in class, learning and studying?”

I don’t have a problem with a school having a dress code; in fact, I attended a school that didn’t allow jeans or shorts or shirts without collars, but I do have a problem when the dress code is discriminately based on gender and body type. There is a big difference between telling all students to dress respectfully and telling curvy girls to dress in a way that doesn’t distract boys.

White feminism

Reblogging again.

Perfect example.

For the white folks trying to figure out why this isn’t okay, let’s clarify.

Miley, a white female entertainer, is being held up as powerful for utilizing her sexuality in her work. Attempts to speak ill of her are met with loud criticism and accusations of “slut shaming” her. She is being lauded as an “icon” without contributing meaningfully to the betterment of women and in spite of her insults to transwomen. She’s also being appropriative and racist as fuck, throwing women of color under the proverbial bus and mocks them as being sexual objects for her own advancement and publicity. Miley also comes from a show biz family, and thus has astounding privilege based on growing up with wealth.

Nikki Minaj, a female entertainer of color, is being mocked for showing cleavage in an outfit. That’s it. A low-cut shirt, with a jacket style most associated with business wear.  This is in spite of Nikki writing her own songs, being an outspoken advocate for the education of women and girls, her repeated and clear respect for non-binary genders and transwomen/transmen, and her continued championing of “women who come from nothing.”

Can you see the problem?

I’d like to post an alternate link with a pro-SCA5 perspective from Asian-American activist Jenn Fang. I think people should read through this issue very carefully before making any determinations.
